Getting a roof top tent for my Subaru Forester was my long time plan. Unfortunately commercial hard shell roof top tents were costing upwards of $2000 and I could not justify the cost for a tent. So I armed myself with some wood working power tools, sewing machine and fabrics and set on to build a lightweight roof top tent on my own.
Materials:
- 15/32” Plywood base
- 1×3 and 1×4 common wood strips for frame
- Kilz original primer
- Ironarmour truck bedliner
- 67lbs 15” gas struts
- Door hinges
- Self locking latches from amazon
- 3” Foam mattress
- Marine grade Automotive weather seal
- Coroplast for top lid
- Ottertex Waterproof canvas from fabricwholesaledirect
- 1” x 52” aluminium extrusions (2) for base support
- 8ft Telescopic Aluminium ladder
